Psychologist or Psychiatrist?
Choosing a Psychologist or Psychiatrist
Psychiatry, being a medical discipline, has as a fundamental element the making of a diagnosis, which implies the ability to distinguish mental disorders and behavioral alterations due to other causes.
The main difference between psychiatrists and psychologists is that the former are medical doctors specializing in mental health, while psychologists have clinical training and specialization in human behavior, but not medical expertise. Therefore, an initial evaluation and diagnosis by a psychiatrist is crucial to rule out any non-psychiatric conditions that might be causing the symptoms.
In our practice, psychiatrists and psychologists work in an interdisciplinary manner, collaborating with each other to achieve the best treatment for our patients.
However, the specific treatment will always depend on the case and the patient, so it may require only the psychology service or only the psychiatry service, or one treatment may predominate over the other, always in a consensual manner between the professional and the patient.
